Reflections on How I Experienced the Outbreak of the Balkan War in Sarajevo as a Young Girl and Became a Refugee
Nevena Wahl, European Economic and Social Committee, European Union, Brussels

hosted by Professor Winrich Kühne

Nevena Wahl is an EU official, who has been working at the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels on social media and external communication since 2014.

Before joining the EU, she spent 15 years working in communication and advertising in Sarajevo, BiH. From 2006 until 2012, she was the Deputy Managing Director of the Sarajevo office of Communis, the largest PR agency in the region. From 1999 until 2006 she was the sales and promotion manager of Buybook, a publishing house and bookshop chain in BiH.

From 1998 until 2012, as a free-lancer, Wahl managed Ideologija, a boutique advertising agency in Sarajevo, where she worked on improving the image of BiH companies and brands in the post-war period. Before entering the world of advertising, from 1997 until 1999, Nevena Wahl was Project Assistant and Translator at Ars Aevi, a Museum of Contemporary art based in Sarajevo and Florence. The museum was established during the war in Sarajevo as a cultural resistance movement and holds a collection of 130 works by renowned world artists.

At the age of 12, she fled the besieged city of Sarajevo with her brother, embarking on a 5-year refugee journey. She returned to Sarajevo in 1997, and lived there until 2013.

Currently she is on parental leave, living in Kosovo with her husband and four children.
